Work is underway to expand the airport in Ilulissat in Greenland. The airport’s runway will be extended from 845 metres to 2200 metres and three buildings will be added: a terminal, a service building, and a control tower. After expansion, jets will be able to land at the airport.
A lot of development is expected in the area in the coming years around the tourist industry. The landscape in the area is magnificent and includes, among other things, the Ilulissat Icefjord, where you can see huge icebergs and the Greenland Ice Sheet breaking.
The expansion of the airports in Ilulissat and Nuuk improves transport links in the country. The number of direct flights will increase, and it will be possible to reduce costs, travel time, and carbon dioxide emissions with fewer domestic trips in Greenland.
Verkís collaborating with a contractor in a turnkey tender, together with more consultants. Verkís was in charge of designing the foundations for the terminal building, advised the contractor regarding various issues related to load-bearing capacity, reviewed the consultant’s design data from the manufacturers, was in charge of summarising the design data of other consultants for the design of the load-bearing capacity for all three buildings, and was responsible for drawing up a design report for all three buildings.
