Electric Miðbakki: Cruise Ship Connected to Electricity

This week, a cruise ship was connected to electricity at Miðbakki in the Reykjavík harbor, reducing air and noise pollution in the city center. Verkís oversaw the design, equipment procurement, supervision, and testing for this project.

The Norwegian cruise ship Fridtjof Nansen was the first vessel to connect to electricity in Reykjavík harbor. The connection took only ten minutes and saves the ship seven to eight thousand liters of fuel during a 12-hour port stay. The ship’s chief engineer, Jan Robin Pettersen, told media: “Usually we burn all that oil, and it costs Reykjavík and the planet emissions. Now we save that.”

Halla Hrund Logadóttir, the Director General of the National Energy Authority and former presidential candidate, attended the ceremony and emphasized the importance of port electrification for energy transitions. Sigurður Jökull Ólafsson, Marketing Director of Faxaflóahafnir, stated that this is a significant step for environmental issues and improved air quality in Reykjavík.

Verkís and Faxaflóahafnir collaborated on the shore connection project with the Norwegian shipping company Hurtigruten Expeditions. Faxaflóahafnir is among the first ports in the world to offer this service, marking a significant step towards a cleaner future.
