The Svartsengi Power Plant Unit 7 project (SVA7) has recently received the Teningurinn award from the Association of Chartered Engineers in Iceland at Engineering Day 2026. The award is given in recognition of outstanding projects or execution and serves as an important testament to engineering expertise, technical innovation, and experience in the field of geothermal energy utilization. The project clearly demonstrates how strong engineering knowledge, effective planning, and good collaboration can ensure the development of critical infrastructure under challenging conditions.

SVA7 represents a major upgrade of the Svartsengi power plant, where a new and powerful generation unit replaces older equipment. Through this project, electricity production capacity has been increased to 85 MW, resource utilization has been improved, and operational reliability has been strengthened for the future.

The project included the installation of a new 55 MW turbine-generator set, which is also the largest steam turbine in Iceland. As part of the development, two older power plant units at Svartsengi were decommissioned, alongside extensive upgrades to equipment related to both electricity and hot water production.

The Trophy

Engineering consultancy firm Verkís supported the project from start to finish, from preliminary design through to final completion. Mechanical engineering specialists assisted with the selection and procurement of key equipment, as well as the design of all pipelines and connections. Electrical engineering experts contributed to the selection and procurement of generators and transformers, along with all associated design work. Structural engineering specialists were responsible for designing the power plant building itself. Verkís consultants were also present on-site during construction to ensure quality throughout the execution of the project.

The project builds on decades of experience that Verkís has in the Svartsengi area, having provided consulting services for the power plant since 1978.

We warmly congratulate HS Orka and everyone involved in the project on this achievement and thank them for successful collaboration over the years.

“It is very gratifying to see a project of this scale receive such recognition. It reflects the strong collaboration of all parties involved, as well as the solid experience and expertise that Verkís has built in the field of geothermal power. Our team is proud to have contributed to the project, and this recognition underscores the importance of collaboration and our role in geothermal projects, both domestically and internationally.”
