Project overview
There were indications that hot water could be found at Hjalteyri, but Hjalteyri is about twenty kilometers north of Akureyri.
Norðurorka decided to start test drilling there between 2002 and 2003, but by then Norðurorka’s water budget had become difficult. Drilling at Hjalteyri yielded good results, and as early as 2003, the laying of a DN300 millimetre supply pipe from Hjalteyri to Akureyri was started.
With the expansion of the town and the increase in population, the need for hot water has increased accordingly. The power demand has been met by significantly increasing the pumping of water from Hjalteyri, along with the associated costs.
At the end of 2017, Norðurorka decided to start preparing the laying of a new water supply from Hjalteyri to strengthen the heating utilities system. It was decided that the new trunk pipe would be DN500 millimetres and it would extend from Hjalteyri to the intersection of Glerárgata and Þórunnarstræti to connections to the powerful trunk lines of the heating utility’s distribution system.
Verkís was responsible for the preliminary and detailed design of the vessel as well as the tender for materials.

The Challenge
As Akureyri continued to grow, demand for district heating increased significantly, requiring additional geothermal hot water resources and greater transmission capacity. Following the successful development of geothermal wells at Hjalteyri, the challenge was to strengthen the long-distance heating network and ensure a reliable, future-proof supply of hot water to the town.
Our Solution
Verkís provided the preliminary and detailed design for a new high-capacity transmission pipeline connecting Hjalteyri to Akureyri. Our services also included preparing tender documentation for the pipeline materials, supporting the development of a DN500 trunk main designed to increase capacity and integrate with the city’s existing district heating distribution network.
The Result
The new transmission pipeline enhances the reliability and capacity of Akureyri’s district heating system, ensuring sufficient geothermal hot water to support future population growth and urban development. Through careful engineering and infrastructure planning, Verkís helped strengthen one of North Iceland’s most important renewable energy systems and secure a sustainable heating supply for years to come.
