Vaðalda Wind Farm

The Vaðalda Wind Farm marks a significant milestone in Iceland’s energy transition as the country’s first utility-scale wind power project.

Located east of the Þjórsá River and south of the Sultartangi Dam, the wind farm will comprise 28 wind turbines and will become an integral part of Landsvirkjun’s renewable energy portfolio.

Project overview

Verkís has played a key role in supporting the project through transportation planning and infrastructure improvements required for the delivery of turbine components from Þorlákshöfn to the construction site. The work included route assessments, road widening, intersection modifications, and the relocation of roadside infrastructure to accommodate oversized transport loads.

The transport operation represents one of the most extensive logistics projects undertaken in Iceland, involving a 130-kilometre route across five municipalities. The project demonstrates how infrastructure planning, transportation logistics, and engineering expertise can successfully support the deployment of large-scale renewable energy infrastructure.

In parallel, Verkís is responsible for the design of a new Swan-certified service building in Hella, which will support the operation and maintenance of the wind farm and provide facilities for Landsvirkjun and turbine supplier Enercon.
