Tapovan Project Enters Exploration Phase
Verkís continues to strengthen its commitment to supporting the global energy transition through its growing collaboration with partners in India. Building on the Memorandum of Understanding signed with the Government of Uttarakhand in 2025, work has now commenced on the Tapovan Geothermal Project, marking an important milestone in the state’s journey towards clean, renewable energy.
The project is being carried out through TechonVerkis, the joint venture between Verkís and Techon Consulting Engineers, which has been appointed to prepare the Initial Project Report (IPR). The report will include geological investigations, technical assessments and the foundation for future exploration activities to evaluate the geothermal potential of the Tapovan geothermal field in Chamoli District, Uttarakhand.
India possesses significant untapped geothermal resources, offering considerable potential to diversify its renewable energy portfolio while supporting long-term energy security and decarbonisation. Geothermal energy provides a reliable, low-carbon and sustainable source of energy that can contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, strengthening climate resilience and supporting regional economic development.
The Tapovan project represents the next step in translating technical expertise into practical solutions for the clean energy transition. By combining Iceland’s internationally recognised experience in geothermal development with India’s growing renewable energy ambitions, Verkís and TechonVerkis aim to support the development of sustainable geothermal resources that can deliver long-term environmental, social and economic benefits.
As exploration activities progress, Verkís looks forward to working closely with government stakeholders and local partners to help unlock India’s geothermal potential and contribute to a more sustainable energy future.
