The Tapovan Geothermal Project marks an important step in exploring India’s geothermal potential and supporting the country’s transition to clean, renewable energy.
Located in Chamoli District in Uttarakhand, the project is being developed through TechonVerkis, a joint venture between Verkís and Techon Consulting Engineers.
Following a Memorandum of Understanding between Verkís and the Government of Uttarakhand in 2025, TechonVerkis has been appointed to prepare the Initial Project Report (IPR) for the Tapovan geothermal project.
The IPR includes geological investigations, technical assessments and the groundwork for future exploration activities to evaluate the geothermal potential of the Tapovan geothermal field.
India has significant untapped geothermal resources, with the potential to diversify its renewable energy portfolio, strengthen energy security and support long-term decarbonisation. Geothermal energy can provide a reliable and low-carbon source of energy while contributing to regional development and reduced greenhouse gas emissions.
The project combines Verkís’ extensive international experience in geothermal development with Techon Consulting Engineers’ local expertise and knowledge. Together, the partners aim to support the responsible development of geothermal resources in India and identify opportunities for sustainable, long-term energy production.
