Vaðalda Wind Farm Commissioned – Iceland’s First Wind Farm

On september 15th, Vaðalda Wind Farm, Iceland’s first wind farm, was officially commissioned at a ceremony in the Þjórsá–Tungnaá area. The first phase of the project comprises 14 wind turbines, with a total of 28 turbines to be installed by the time construction is completed in 2027. Landsvirkjun is the owner and developer of the project.

The commissioning of Vaðalda Wind Farm marks a milestone in the history of energy generation in Iceland. Located east of the Þjórsá River and south of the Sultartangi Dam, the wind farm will strengthen Iceland’s renewable energy system by operating in conjunction with the hydropower plants in the area.

Extensive Involvement by Verkís

Verkís has contributed to the project in a wide range of areas, from the early stages of development through to commissioning, and is proud to have played a part in the development of Iceland’s first wind farm.

Verkís’ involvement included design and preparation of tender documents for:

• roads and infrastructure within the project area
• turbine platforms and crane pads
• wind turbine foundations in collaboration with Rambøll
• the Vaðalda collector substation
• electrical equipment for the collector substation
• high-voltage and telecommunications cables within the site
• necessary upgrades to the road network to enable the transport of wind turbine components from Þorlákshöfn to Vaðalda
• a service building in Hella for the operation of the wind farm

In addition, Verkís carried out geological investigations at the site during the early stages of the project and, last but not least, contributed to testing and commissioning.

The project has required close collaboration between numerous specialists at Verkís, including experts in road engineering, geotechnical engineering, electrical and control systems, structural engineering and project management.

A Milestone for Iceland’s Energy Transition

The commissioning of Vaðalda Wind Farm represents an important milestone in the development of Iceland’s energy system and a step towards more diverse utilisation of renewable energy resources. The project demonstrates how wind and hydropower can complement each other to increase flexibility and strengthen energy security.
