Verkís participated in HYDRO 2026
Verkís participated in the international HYDRO 2026 conference, held in Bologna, Italy, from 14–16 October. The participation was organised through Green by Iceland, with Verkís sharing an Icelandic pavilion with Landsvirkjun, EFLA and COWI. In addition, Verkís specialists presented their experience in designing protective barriers against lava flows near Grindavík and Svartsengi.
Showcasing Icelandic Expertise on the International Stage
HYDRO is an international forum for companies and specialists working in hydropower and dam engineering. The conference brought together experts from around the world to share knowledge, present innovative solutions and discuss challenges and opportunities in hydropower and renewable energy development.
Participation in the joint Icelandic pavilion provided an opportunity to showcase Icelandic engineering expertise and experience in energy production and infrastructure development.
Presentation on Lava Protection Barriers near Grindavík and Svartsengi
Verkís specialists Hörn Hrafnsdóttir, Sólveig Kristín Sigurðardóttir and Emilía Sól Guðgeirsdóttir presented a paper at the conference entitled Lava Protection Barriers in Southwest Iceland – How Hydropower Engineers Have Battled with Nature.
Their presentation explored the design of protective barriers built to safeguard Grindavík and Svartsengi from lava flows. They discussed how experience and expertise gained from hydropower plant and dam design could be applied to these exceptional circumstances, including modelling, barrier design and the knowledge gained throughout the project.
The project demonstrates how multidisciplinary expertise and experience from challenging infrastructure projects can be applied to new and unexpected challenges.
Knowledge and Collaboration for Renewable Energy
HYDRO 2026 provided Verkís with an opportunity to share Icelandic expertise, engage with international specialists and strengthen collaboration in hydropower and renewable energy.
