Atuarfik Inussuk, the largest school building in Greenland, has been nominated for School Building of the Year 2026 by Nohrcon, a Danish education and consultancy company that recognises outstanding school buildings. The nomination highlights the school’s ambitious design, which brings together education, community and nature.

Verkís was responsible for the engineering design of the project on behalf of Ístak, the main contractor for the construction of the school. The project involved extensive international collaboration and placed significant demands on the design and technical solutions required to meet the challenging conditions in Greenland.

A School and Community Hub in the Heart of Nuuk

Atuarfik Inussuk covers approximately 18,000 square metres and accommodates up to 1,200 children. The site also includes a separate kindergarten building for approximately 120 children. The school consists of seven interconnected buildings and is designed to provide an excellent environment for education while also serving as a community hub for the people of Nuuk, with facilities available for a range of activities outside school hours.

The school is centrally located in Nuuk, close to key public institutions and the city’s main shopping centre. Its design draws inspiration from Greenland’s dramatic and rugged landscape, aiming to create a safe and diverse environment for children.

Collaboration on a Major Project

Construction began in 2019, with Verkís carrying out the engineering design on behalf of Ístak in close collaboration with the contractor and other project partners. The nomination of Atuarfik Inussuk for School Building of the Year 2026 is a welcome recognition of the project, which places high-quality design and the relationship between the building and its surroundings at the forefront.
