Leading Iceland’s Energy Independence

Our long-term vision is for Iceland to become fully independent of fossil fuels, meeting all its energy needs with renewable sources. While progress has been made in land transport, the maritime sector presents unique challenges.

Verkís is leading two groundbreaking projects in maritime energy transition, focusing on electric fuels, wind, and solar technologies for marine vessels.

Electric Miðbakki: Cruise Ship Connected to Electricity

A cruise ship was connected to electricity at Miðbakki in the Reykjavík harbor, reducing air and noise pollution in the city center. Verkís oversaw the design, equipment procurement, supervision, and testing for this project.

New E-fuels project to make international shipping climate neutral

Transport and trade on the ocean must be made much greener. This is the goal of the new €17 million European GAMMA project, where companies and researchers will develop and convert a bulk carrier to sail on climate-neutral fuels and green power.
