HYDROVISION International Conference in Denver

Þorbergur Steinn Leifsson, Civil Engineer and Hydraulic and Hydrology Engineer at Verkís, gave an engaging presentation at the HYDROVISION International conference in Denver this July. HYDROVISION International is the largest gathering of hydropower and dam professionals in North America, with over 1,200 participants from more than 50 countries. This conference is similar to the HYDRO conferences held in Europe, which Verkís and other Icelandic companies attend annually. However, it has been some time since an Icelander attended this event.

Þorbergur’s presentation, titled “Universal Graphs for Optimum Velocity in Various Types of Waterways: Method, Assumptions, Sensitivity, and Results,” focused on optimizing waterways. He based the method on an approach by Loftur Þorsteinsson, former CEO of VST, which has been used in Iceland for decades but remains largely unknown abroad. The method is straightforward and accurate. Þorbergur also introduced simple sensitivity analysis techniques to get precise results for factors like construction costs and energy prices using the same graphs. He had previously presented these methods at HYDRO 2022 and in The International Journal on HYDROPOWER & DAMS.
