New calcareous algae processing plant under construction in Súðavík

Construction of a new calcareous algae processing plant for Íslenska kalkþörungafélagið at Langeyri in Súðavík is progressing well. A topping-out ceremony was recently held to mark the completion of the roof structure of the new plant building.

Verkís Involved from the Early Stages

Verkís has been involved in the project from its early stages and was responsible for the preliminary design of the plant. Since then, Verkís has reviewed the overall design and provided the required review and approval of construction drawings.

Verkís has also been responsible for planning amendments associated with the project, including work on both the municipal master plan and the detailed development plan.

The plant building is substantial in scale, measuring approximately 100 metres long and 40 metres wide, with an additional extension running along the length of the building. Hungarian contractor Lakogep is responsible for the building construction, while Tígur ehf. is carrying out the earthworks.

Testing Scheduled to Begin in Mid-2027

Construction has progressed according to schedule, and the building is expected to be completed around the end of the year. Installation of the plant equipment will then begin, with testing scheduled to commence in mid-2027.

The estimated construction cost is ISK 5.5–6.5 billion. In addition, approximately ISK 1 billion is expected to be invested in a new underground power cable from Ísafjörður to Súðavík, to be installed by Orkubú Vestfjarða and financed by Íslenska kalkþörungafélagið.

The topping-out ceremony marks a major milestone in the development at Langeyri, and it will be exciting to see the new plant take its final shape over the coming months.
