Einbúavirkjun

Litluvellir ehf. plans to build a 9.8 megawatt hydropower plant, Einbúavirkjun, in Skjálfandafljót in Bárðardalur.

Verkís conducted an environmental impact assessment for Litluvellir ehf. along with preliminary design and a feasibility study.



Project overview

This is a flow run-of-the-river installation in the land of Kálfborgará and Einbúi in Bárðardalur. The installed power of Einbúavirkjun is close to the criteria for a construction with an  assessment obligation, and the amount of mining due to the project is subject to assessment obligation.

Litluvellir ehf. is of the opinion that the project should be subject to an environmental impact assessment, and that the public and others have the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the project and make comments in an open assessment process. The National Planning Agency agreed that Einbúavirkjun should be discussed in the environmental impact assessment.

The Challenge

The proposed Einbúi Hydropower Plant was developed to harness the renewable energy potential of the Skjálfandafljót River through a run-of-river scheme while carefully evaluating its environmental impacts. As the project approached the regulatory threshold for mandatory environmental assessment, a transparent and comprehensive planning process was essential to support informed decision-making.

Our Solution

Verkís carried out the environmental impact assessment, preliminary design and feasibility study for the project. Our multidisciplinary team evaluated the technical viability of the hydropower scheme alongside its environmental considerations, preparing the documentation required for the planning and permitting process and supporting stakeholder engagement through an open assessment process.

The Result

The studies established a solid technical and environmental foundation for the proposed 9.8 MW hydropower development. By integrating engineering expertise with environmental assessment from the earliest project stages, Verkís helped ensure that future development decisions could be based on a thorough understanding of both the project’s renewable energy potential and its environmental impacts.
