Hvolsvöllur substation

Substation system located in Hvolsvöllur.

To strengthen the transmission system in South of Iceland and increase security of delivery will Landsnet build new 66 kV AIS substation with five switch bays in Hvolsvöllur.

Project overview

To strengthen the transmission system in South of Iceland and increase security of delivery will Landsnet build new 66 kV AIS substation with five switch bays in Hvolsvöllur. The substation replaces the current one that dates back to 1953. It will be built on the same plot as the old one. The substation equipment is housed in a concrete building.

Verkís is responsible for tender design, installation of all equipment and design supervision. Verkís also assists during tendering and construction time.

The Challenge

To improve the reliability and resilience of South Iceland’s electricity transmission network, Landsnet needed to replace the ageing Hvolsvöllur Substation, originally built in 1953, with a modern facility capable of supporting future electricity demand and strengthening regional security of supply.

Our Solution

Verkís was responsible for the tender design, installation design and design supervision of the new 66 kV air-insulated switchgear (AIS) substation. Our services also included support during procurement and construction, ensuring the successful delivery of a modern substation with five switchgear bays integrated into the existing transmission network.

The Result

The new Hvolsvöllur Substation provides a modern, reliable and future-ready transmission hub that strengthens the electricity network in South Iceland. By replacing ageing infrastructure with a high-performance facility, Verkís has helped improve security of supply and support the continued development of the region’s electrical transmission system.
