Fossárvirkjun

Fossárvirkjun is in Engidalur, leading from Skutulsfjörður, in the Westfjords.

It was first commissioned in 1937. At that time the drop was 302 metres and the energy production was 3.5 gigawatt hours per year.

Project overview

The power plant uses water from Fossavatn, which is about 350 metres above sea level.

Verkís participated in the renovation of the previous power plant between 2011 and 2015. A new station building was built, new mechanical and electrical equipment was purchased, and the inlet pipe was renewed. The power plant was commissioned in 2015.

Verkís worked on, among other things, preliminary design, feasibility study, flow and energy calculations, tender documents for machines and pressure pipe renewal, managed electricity and control equipment, and assisted the buyer during the design period. Verkís also prepared a land-use plan for the renewal of the power plant.

The Challenge

Originally commissioned in 1937, Fossár Hydropower Plant required a comprehensive modernisation to replace ageing infrastructure, improve efficiency and secure reliable renewable electricity generation for the Westfjords. The project involved upgrading both the power station and its associated hydraulic and electromechanical systems while making the best use of the existing hydropower resource.

Our Solution

Verkís provided multidisciplinary engineering services throughout the redevelopment, including feasibility studies, preliminary design, hydrological and energy analyses, land-use planning and tender documentation. Our team also managed the design of the new mechanical, electrical and control systems, supported procurement and oversaw the replacement of the pressure pipeline and construction of a new powerhouse.

The Result

Commissioned in 2015, the modernised Fossár Hydropower Plant delivers a more efficient, reliable and resilient renewable energy supply for the region. Through comprehensive engineering and technical advisory services, Verkís helped extend the operational life of one of Iceland’s oldest hydropower plants while enhancing its long-term performance and sustainability.
