Project overview
There is a tunnel from the Institute under Sudurgata street connecting the building with the University Square building on the other side.
The architectural firm Arkítektur.is designed the winning proposal for the building in an architectural competition held in 2012. Verkís was selected through a bidding process to manage all engineering design except acoustics.
Veröld – Vigdís‘ house is a modern facility, designed in accordance with the latest building and environmental standards. The project was completed by using BIM (Building Information Modelling) and in accordance with the BREEAM environmental assessment method for sustainable buildings with the aim of reaching the “very good” category.
Verkís services was structural and foundation design, piping systems, heating, snow melting, domestic and waste water, ventilation and sprinkler design, electrical systems design and fire safety design.

The Challenge
Veröld – Vigdís’ House was developed as a landmark academic and cultural building for the University of Iceland, housing the Vigdís International Centre for Multilingualism and Intercultural Understanding. The project required a modern, sustainable building that seamlessly integrates with the university campus while meeting high environmental and technical performance standards.
Our Solution
Verkís was responsible for all engineering design, except acoustics, delivering structural and foundation engineering, mechanical and electrical systems, ventilation, fire safety, plumbing, heating, snow melting and sprinkler systems. The project was designed using Building Information Modelling (BIM) and developed in accordance with the BREEAM sustainability framework, supporting the project’s ambition to achieve a Very Good environmental rating.
The Result
Completed as a state-of-the-art educational and cultural facility, Veröld – Vigdís’ House provides a sustainable, flexible and technically advanced environment for research, education and international collaboration. Through integrated engineering and BIM-based project delivery, Verkís helped create a future-ready building that supports the University of Iceland’s long-term vision for sustainable development and academic excellence.
