When planning and designing structures along Iceland’s coasts, a number of factors must be taken into account, and Verkís provides consultation and services at all levels, from planning and research, design, management, and supervision of construction, as well as operation and maintenance of port facilities.

User needs analysis provides information on the size of ships, their draw and service needs, but information on wave height and wave direction must also be gathered in order to assess the most favourable location of port facilities. Information on soil conditions must be obtained and further research proposed if necessary, and both mining and emissions must be considered.
