Port of Akureyri Shore Power Infrastructure

Ships require electrical power not only while at sea but also when berthed in port.

Shore power systems enable vessels to connect to the local electricity grid, reducing fuel consumption, emissions, and noise in harbour areas.



Project overview

Verkís has been involved in several projects related to vessel shore power connections at the Port of Akureyri. The work included assessments of power supply capabilities, electrical infrastructure requirements, and the development of solutions to support shore power connections for larger vessels and cruise ships.

An analysis was carried out to evaluate the power generation and supply capacity available from Norðurorka, as well as the infrastructure required to support shore power facilities at Akureyri’s harbour areas. This included a cost estimate for a 4 MVA shore power connection and an assessment of the electrical distribution system upgrades required to deliver the necessary capacity.

Verkís completed two projects for the Associated Ports of North Iceland related to shore power connections at Tangabryggja and Oddeyrarbryggja. The first project, carried out between 2018 and 2019, focused on evaluating the cost of receiving a 4 MVA power supply from Norðurorka and providing shore power services for larger vessels and cruise ships.

The second project, initiated in 2019, involved the design and preparation of tender documentation for a 400 V, 50 Hz electrical distribution system, including cable routes, utility ducts, provisions for future high-voltage shore power connections, water supply infrastructure, and dedicated utility buildings for electrical and water services.

The project supports the transition towards cleaner and more sustainable port operations by establishing the infrastructure needed for future vessel electrification.

The Challenge

As maritime transport moves towards lower-emission operations, the Port of Akureyri needed modern shore power infrastructure capable of supplying electricity to larger vessels and cruise ships while reducing emissions, fuel consumption and noise in the harbour area. The project required careful assessment of the existing electrical grid and future infrastructure needs.

Our Solution

Verkís carried out power supply assessments, electrical infrastructure studies and cost analyses to support the development of shore power facilities at the Port of Akureyri. Our team designed the low-voltage distribution system, utility infrastructure, cable routes and tender documentation, while also planning for future high-voltage shore power connections and expanded port electrification.

The Result

The project established the technical foundation for cleaner and more sustainable port operations by preparing the infrastructure needed for vessel electrification. Through integrated electrical engineering and strategic planning, Verkís helped enable future shore power services that reduce emissions, improve air quality and support the maritime sector’s transition to a low-carbon future.
