Svartárvirkjun

SSB Orka is working on the preparation of up to 9.8 MW hydropower plant in Svartá in Bárðardalur, as well as the laying of an electric cable.

Verkís worked on the environmental impact assessment of Svartárvirkjun for SSB Orka.



Project overview

Svartárvirkjun falls under the Environmental Impact Assessment Act no. 106/2000, according to Article 6 and item 3.22 in the 1st Annex. The electric cable falls under item 10.21 in the 1st Annex. The National Planning Agency issued a decision on February 18, 2016, that the power plant should be subject to an environmental impact assessment, and the agency’s decision on a proposal for an assessment plan is from September 6, 2016.

A preliminary assessment report was submitted to the Planning Agency in September 2017, and the presentation and comment process for it ended on October 23, 2017.

The Challenge

The proposed Svartá Hydropower Plant required a comprehensive environmental assessment to evaluate the potential impacts of a new 9.8 MW hydropower development and associated transmission infrastructure within a sensitive natural environment. The project needed to balance renewable energy generation with environmental protection and regulatory compliance.

Our Solution

Verkís led the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process on behalf of SSB Orka, preparing the environmental studies and supporting documentation required for the planning and permitting process. Our work included environmental analyses, impact evaluation, stakeholder consultation and the preparation of assessment reports in accordance with Icelandic environmental legislation.

The Result

The environmental assessment provided a robust basis for regulatory review and future project development, helping identify environmental considerations and mitigation measures at an early stage. Through a structured and science-based EIA process, Verkís supported informed decision-making for the sustainable development of renewable hydropower infrastructure.
