Project overview
The primary objective was to improve traffic safety and ensure sufficient capacity to accommodate increasing traffic volumes generated by new developments on both sides of the Ring Road. The project supported national and municipal goals of improving road safety while facilitating future growth in the area.
The scheme included modifications to both the horizontal and vertical alignment of the Ring Road, as well as the construction of a roundabout on a bridge crossing above the highway. Lowering the Ring Road improved sight distances for motorists and provided effective noise shielding for nearby residential areas.
Verkís was responsible for the design of roads and pedestrian pathways, drainage systems, district heating pipelines, water supply infrastructure, acoustic assessments, and the preparation of tender and construction documentation.
The Challenge
Increasing development in Leirvogstunga and Tungumelar placed growing demands on one of Iceland’s busiest transport corridors. The project required a safer, higher-capacity interchange that could improve traffic flow, reduce congestion and support future residential and commercial growth while minimizing impacts on the surrounding community.
Our Solution
Verkís delivered the multidisciplinary design of the grade-separated interchange, including roads, pedestrian pathways, drainage systems, district heating pipelines, water supply infrastructure, acoustic assessments and tender documentation. The design featured a bridge with a roundabout above the Ring Road, together with revised road alignments that improved visibility, traffic safety and noise protection for nearby residential areas.
The Result
The completed interchange provides a safer and more efficient connection between the Ring Road and the surrounding development areas, increasing capacity for future growth while enhancing traffic flow and road safety. The project demonstrates how integrated infrastructure design can support sustainable urban expansion and improve the overall performance of the transportation network.
