Leirvogstunga / Tungumelar Interchange

The Leirvogstunga / Tungumelar project involved the design of a grade-separated interchange at the junction of Iceland’s Ring Road (Route 1).

The access roads serving the Leirvogstunga residential area and the Tungumelar commercial district.

Project overview

The primary objective was to improve traffic safety and ensure sufficient capacity to accommodate increasing traffic volumes generated by new developments on both sides of the Ring Road. The project supported national and municipal goals of improving road safety while facilitating future growth in the area.

The scheme included modifications to both the horizontal and vertical alignment of the Ring Road, as well as the construction of a roundabout on a bridge crossing above the highway. Lowering the Ring Road improved sight distances for motorists and provided effective noise shielding for nearby residential areas.

Verkís was responsible for the design of roads and pedestrian pathways, drainage systems, district heating pipelines, water supply infrastructure, acoustic assessments, and the preparation of tender and construction documentation.
