Vesturlandsvegur – road

Expanding of Hringvegur(1), about nine kilometers long road, three roundabout on Hringvegur(1), about twelve kilometers of sideways (both new and updated current roads), five underpasses (three steel tunnels and two concrete tunnels), two structures over a river (extension and widening) and about 3,4 kilometers of cycling and walking paths.

The project was tempered in the EEA. Six engineering firms were qualified bidders and had Verkís the lowest bid. Vegagerðin is the buyer of the project.

The Challenge

As traffic volumes increased on Iceland’s Ring Road, the Vesturlandsvegur corridor required significant upgrades to improve capacity, safety and accessibility. The project involved expanding a major highway while maintaining connectivity through new intersections, bridges, underpasses and active transportation infrastructure.

Our Solution

Verkís was responsible for the multidisciplinary design of the 9 km road expansion, including three roundabouts, five underpasses, bridge widening works, local roads, utility coordination and 3.4 km of new walking and cycling paths. The project was developed to modern highway standards, supporting safer traffic flow for all road users while preparing the corridor for future growth.

The upgraded Vesturlandsvegur will provide a safer, more efficient and better-connected transport corridor with improved traffic capacity and enhanced facilities for pedestrians and cyclists. The project demonstrates Verkís’ expertise in delivering complex highway infrastructure that supports sustainable mobility and long-term transportation development.
