Project overview
In the gym, there will be an artificial turf pitch that meets the requirements of the Football Association of Iceland for 7-8 people match and facilities for the practice indoor track and field in the north end of the building.
The facilities for indoor track and field will consist of tartan tracks and two sand pits for jumping, as well as high jump and pole jumping facilities. The multifunctional sports hall will be heated in the area of the indoor track and field, with a ventilation system, ovens or interplay of both. The area for soccer will not be heated otherwise than a minimum temperature of 5°C (41°F) is guaranteed.

The Challenge
The City of Reykjavík required a modern indoor sports facility capable of supporting football, athletics and a variety of community activities throughout the year. The project called for a flexible, energy-efficient design that could accommodate multiple sports while providing high-quality training facilities.
Our Solution
Verkís provided preliminary design, client consultancy, tender documentation, project supervision and representation on the building committee. The multidisciplinary design includes a 4,300 m² multifunctional sports hall with a full-size indoor football pitch, dedicated indoor athletics facilities, ventilation and climate control systems, and an adjoining service building.
The Result
The new Suður Mjódd sports hall will provide year-round facilities for football, athletics and community activities, supporting increased participation in sport and recreation. Through integrated engineering, project management and technical expertise, Verkís is helping deliver a modern, flexible facility that will serve Reykjavík’s growing community for years to come.
