Bardu hydropower plant

The Bardu Hydroelectric Projects (n. Bardu prosjektene) are the first small hydro projects in Norway where Verkís is the main designer.
These projects are owned by the Norwegian power company Fjellkraft AS.


Project overview

The Bardu HEP refers to two hydroelectric projects (HEP) in the municipality of Bardu in Troms County in Norway. The projects harness the discharge from the rivers Dittielva and Krogstadelva which are both tributaries to the Bardu river (n. Barduelva), the largest source of hydroelectricity in Troms county.
The Hydroelectric Projects are located in the municipality of Bardu in North-Norway at 68°N. The installed power is in total 9,9 MW in two separate powerstations.
The dams are vertical concrete walls with support walls perpendicular to the dam face, which provide additional lateral support. This reduces the volume of construction materials required in the main dam wall. From the intake pond, ductile iron pipes convey the harnessed water down to a six jet Pelton turbine on a vertical axis. The small powerhouses consist of a generator room and an adjacent smaller space housing a control room and a high voltage room.  All the powerhouses have the same dimensions and arrangement, and are built around the electromechanical equipment. The energy is delivered from the 6 kV generators via step-up transformers, 22 kV switchgear and transmission lines.
The hydroelectric projects are characterized by long pressure pipes of buried ductile iron. The two projects combined have about four kilometers of pipelines.
Verkís services was evaluation of site and surveying (cartography), environmental documentation (n. Landskabs og miljøplan), technical documentation (n. Teknisk detjaljplan), tender documents for pressure pipe and civil works design (excavation, concrete, hydraulic etc.).

The Challenge

The Bardu Hydropower Projects marked Verkís’ first small-scale hydropower developments in Norway, requiring efficient, cost-effective solutions tailored to the mountainous terrain of Northern Norway. The projects were designed to harness two tributaries of the Bardu River while minimizing environmental impact and construction costs.

Our Solution

As the lead engineering consultant, Verkís delivered site evaluation, surveying, environmental documentation, technical design and tender documentation for the civil works and pressure pipelines. The projects feature compact intake structures, buried ductile iron penstocks, Pelton turbines and standardized powerhouse designs, providing an efficient and reliable solution for small-scale hydropower generation.

The Result

The two hydropower plants have a combined installed capacity of 9.9 MW, providing clean, renewable electricity to the Norwegian grid. Through optimized engineering, standardized design and environmentally conscious planning, Verkís helped deliver reliable small hydropower facilities that demonstrate sustainable energy development in challenging Arctic conditions.
