The Bergen biogas plant in Bergen, Norway, produces methane gas which is used as fuel for buses in the municipality.
The Bergen biogas plant in Bergen, Norway, produces methane gas which is used as fuel for buses in the municipality. The plant collects sludge from sewage treatment plants in the municipality and produces methane from it. About 42.000 tonnes of wet sludge is expected to flow through the plant each year. When the factory is at full capacity, it can produce methane gas that is capable of running 80 buses.
LOTA – Engineering was a subcontractor for this project. Swedish company Purac was responsible for the design of processing processes and the installation of related equipment.

Verkís was responsible for design of construction systems, HVAC systems, sanitary systems, electrical systems and fire safety systems for biogas treatment plant in Bergen.

Full capacity of methane gas
The Bergen Biogas Treatment Plant was developed to convert municipal sewage sludge into renewable biogas, supporting Bergen’s transition to low-emission public transport and more sustainable waste management. The project required the design of robust building and utility systems for a technically complex industrial process facility.
Verkís provided multidisciplinary engineering services, including the design of structural systems, HVAC, plumbing, electrical installations and fire safety systems. Working alongside the process designer, our team developed the building infrastructure needed to support efficient biogas production while ensuring safe, reliable and compliant plant operation.
Commissioned in 2016, the facility processes approximately 42,000 tonnes of sewage sludge annually, producing renewable methane capable of fuelling around 80 municipal buses. Through integrated engineering design, Verkís helped deliver an important circular economy project that transforms waste into clean energy while reducing greenhouse gas emissions from public transport.
