Pedestrian and Cycling Paths

Verkís has been involved in the design of numerous pedestrian and cycling paths in Iceland and Norway.

These projects typically involve the complete design of pedestrian and cycling infrastructure, including project management and the preparation of tender documentation.

Project overview

Projects in Iceland include the cycle path along Sæbraut in Reykjavík, the pedestrian and cycle path south of Stekkjarbakki in Breiðholt, and the South Mjódd cycle path.

Sæbraut Cycle Path

Verkís was responsible for the detailed design and preparation of tender documents for a 1.8 km cycle path along Sæbraut, extending from Kringlumýrarbraut to the Harpa Concert Hall in Reykjavík.

Pedestrian and Cycle Path South of Stekkjarbakki

Verkís provided the complete design of pedestrian and cycle paths, relocation of traffic signals, and preparation of tender documents. The project involved the design of a 630 m pedestrian and cycle path south of Stekkjarbakki, from Grænistekkur to the underpass at Hamrastekkur in Reykjavík. The project also included the relocation of traffic lights and the design of a pedestrian crossing across Stekkjarbakki.

South Mjódd Cycle Path

Verkís carried out the complete design and preparation of tender documents for a 700 m cycle path along Reykjanesbraut, extending from Árskógar to the municipal boundary with Kópavogur.

Verkís has also participated in research projects commissioned by the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration relating to pedestrian and cycling infrastructure. These include the projects Cycle Superhighways in the Capital Region and Safety of Cyclists on Iceland’s National Road Network.

The Cycle Superhighways in the Capital Region project examined how cycle superhighways are designed and implemented in neighbouring countries, as well as identifying suitable opportunities for developing similar routes in Iceland. Verkís was responsible for data collection, route proposals, and reporting.

The Safety of Cyclists on Iceland’s National Road Network project focused on evaluating the safety of cyclists on national roads throughout Iceland. Verkís was responsible for data collection, analysis, and reporting.
