Sæbraut Pedestrian and Cycling Bridge

Verkís designed a new pedestrian and cycling bridge spanning Sæbraut in Reykjavík, creating a safe and accessible connection between the established Vogahverfi neighbourhood and the new Vogabyggð development.

The project forms part of the Reykjavík Transport Agreement and supports the city’s goals for sustainable mobility and improved urban connectivity.



Project overview

Located between Súðarvogur and Kleppsmýrarvegur, the bridge significantly improves safety and accessibility for pedestrians and cyclists, particularly schoolchildren travelling to and from Vogaskóli. The design focused on providing a user-friendly, durable, and visually integrated structure that enhances connectivity while fitting seamlessly into the urban environment.

The 28-metre-long bridge was fabricated off-site and installed in a single lift operation. The project also includes stair towers, elevators, lighting, safety systems, and connections to the surrounding pedestrian and cycling network. Height restriction structures were incorporated to protect the bridge and ensure safe operation along one of Reykjavík’s busiest transport corridors.

Developed in close collaboration with the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration, the City of Reykjavík, and Better Transport Ltd., the bridge represents an important investment in active transportation infrastructure, helping promote safer travel, improved accessibility, and a more sustainable urban environment.

The Challenge

As Reykjavík continues to expand, improving safe and sustainable connections between existing and new neighbourhoods has become increasingly important. The challenge was to create a pedestrian and cycling crossing over the busy Sæbraut corridor that enhances accessibility while integrating seamlessly into the surrounding urban environment.

Our Solution

Verkís designed a 28-metre pedestrian and cycling bridge connecting Vogahverfi and Vogabyggð. The project included the bridge structure, stair towers, elevators, lighting, safety systems and connections to the surrounding walking and cycling network. Developed in close collaboration with key stakeholders, the design prioritized accessibility, durability and efficient construction through off-site fabrication and single-lift installation.

The Result

The new bridge provides a safe, accessible and attractive route for pedestrians and cyclists, significantly improving connectivity across one of Reykjavík’s busiest transport corridors. By encouraging active mobility and enhancing urban accessibility, the project supports the city’s long-term vision for a safer, more sustainable and better-connected transportation network.
