Traffic Safety

Traffic Signal Optimisation and Traffic Flow Analysis.

Verkís, in collaboration with Viaplan, carried out a comprehensive traffic analysis of the Capital Region’s primary road network.

Project overview

Verkís, in collaboration with Viaplan, carried out a comprehensive traffic analysis of the Capital Region’s primary road network to evaluate traffic conditions during peak travel periods and identify opportunities to improve traffic flow and road safety.

The study examined traffic operations at major intersections and road corridors using the microscopic traffic simulation software VISSIM. Existing traffic conditions were analysed during both morning and afternoon peak hours, assessing key performance indicators such as capacity utilisation, delays, level of service, and queue lengths.

Following the assessment of existing conditions, various traffic signal optimisation measures were evaluated, including revised signal timings, enhanced signal control strategies, and regular performance reviews. The analysis demonstrated that relatively small adjustments to traffic signal operations could significantly improve traffic flow at numerous congestion-prone intersections across the Capital Region.

The project provides a data-driven foundation for improving network efficiency, reducing delays, and supporting safer and more reliable transportation throughout the urban road network.

The Challenge

Growing traffic volumes in the Capital Region were creating congestion, delays and safety challenges at key intersections and road corridors. Improving traffic flow without major infrastructure investments required a data-driven approach to optimise the existing road network.

Our Solution

Verkís, in collaboration with Viaplan, carried out a comprehensive traffic analysis using microscopic traffic simulation to evaluate peak-hour conditions across the primary road network. The project assessed intersection performance, delays, capacity and queue lengths, while testing signal timing adjustments and traffic control strategies to identify the most effective improvements.

The Result

The study demonstrated that targeted optimisation of traffic signal operations can significantly improve traffic flow, reduce delays and enhance road safety across the Capital Region. The project provides a robust analytical foundation for smarter traffic management and more efficient, reliable urban transportation.
